Plan Your Sea Swim at the 40 Foot

The 40 Foot at Sandycove is one of Dublin's most iconic sea swimming spots — and for good reason. The water is clean, cold, and the atmosphere is unlike anywhere else in the city. But timing your swim with the tides makes all the difference.

At high tide, the platform is partially submerged and the water is deep — ideal for a quick jump in and out. At low tide, more of the rock is exposed and entry is shallower. Most swimmers prefer the hour either side of high tide for the easiest access and deepest water.

Right next door, our wood-fired sauna is the perfect way to warm up after a cold plunge. The contrast of heat and cold sea water is one of the best things you can do for your body — and in Sandycove, Dún Laoghaire, you can do both in one session.

About Sandycove Tides

Sandycove sits at the southern tip of Dublin Bay in Dún Laoghaire. The tides here are semi-diurnal — two high tides and two low tides every 24 hours, roughly 6 hours apart. The difference between high and low water is typically 3–4 metres.

The predictions shown here are calculated using tidal harmonic analysis — the same mathematical method used by the Irish Coast Guard and the UK Hydrographic Office. Times are displayed in Irish local time and automatically adjust for daylight saving between GMT and IST.

For sea swimming at the 40 Foot, we recommend checking the tides before you go — not because it's ever unsafe, but because it completely shapes the experience.
